Science Word Search

BEAKER, MAGNET, CIRCUIT, MICROSCOPE: this grid is a tour of the science classroom, with twenty words split between the equipment on the bench, the subjects on the timetable — BIOLOGY, CHEMISTRY, PHYSICS — and the ideas underneath, from ATOM and MOLECULE up to HYPOTHESIS.

We wrote this one for upper-elementary and middle-school teachers, because that is when this vocabulary starts appearing on actual tests. A word search will not teach anyone what a hypothesis is, but making the eye crawl over HYPOTHESIS letter by letter does real work for spelling it later, which is why science teachers have been photocopying puzzles like this for generations. It also makes a low-stakes first-day-of-term activity: every word in the grid is a preview of the year ahead.

A tip that fits the theme: be systematic. Instead of staring at the middle of the grid waiting for words to appear, pick the first letter of a target word and sweep row by row, checking all four reading directions at every hit. It feels slower for the first word and proves dramatically faster by the twentieth — which is, of course, the experimental method applied to the puzzle itself.
