Word Search Maker

Match the word count to the grid. The maker enforces the hard limits — every word needs at least 3 letters, no word can be longer than the grid is wide, and a sheet holds up to 30 words — but inside those limits the feel of the puzzle is all about density. A good rule of thumb: 8–12 short words on a 10 x 10, 10–15 on a 12 x 12, 15–20 on the default 15 x 15, and save the full 30 for an 18 x 18 or 20 x 20. The default sheet above — 18 words on a 15-wide grid — sits right in that comfortable middle.

The arithmetic behind the rule is simple. A 15 x 15 grid has 225 cells; eighteen words averaging six letters lay down roughly a hundred of them, and fewer than that once words start sharing letters. Having a bit under half the grid be real answers is the classic feel: dense enough that the hunt is on, loose enough that the random fill has room to do its decoy work. Cram too many words in and they give each other away; too few and the puzzle is over before the pencil warms up.

Difficulty is really direction count. On Easy, every word reads left-to-right or top-to-bottom — two directions, and the two a young reader already scans in. Medium adds the two forward diagonals for four. Hard opens all eight, including fully backwards words — and backwards is disproportionately harder, because a solver naturally hunts for a word’s first letter and on a reversed word that letter sits at the far end of the trail. The line under the grid tells solvers which directions are in play, so nobody wastes time scanning for diagonals on an Easy sheet.

Repeated letters and overlaps raise the challenge. The generator places the longest words first and lets words cross wherever their letters agree, then fills the empty cells with letters drawn from your own words’ letter distribution — so the noise looks like the signal. That means a list whose words share common chunks (ING, TION, a double E) lays false trails everywhere: the solver keeps finding the first three letters of a word that isn’t there. If you want a gentler sheet, pick words that start with distinct letters.

Theme the list. A themed puzzle plays better and teaches better — the theme narrows what a solver expects to find, which is exactly the kind of guessing that makes a word search satisfying. One caution: a single word carrying a rare letter is a beacon. If only one of your words has a Q, the solver finds the lone Q in the grid and the word is done. Either include a few rare-letter words or none.

The sheet is sized to work on Letter and A4 alike — print at 100% and the margins are already handled, so there is nothing to scale or fiddle with. The answer key always prints as page two, on its own page, whether or not it is showing in the preview; hand out page one and keep page two on your desk. Everything is black-and-white friendly: the puzzle is plain black on white, and the key marks its answers with a light grey highlight that survives a mono laser printer — no colour ink needed.

To keep a copy instead of printing one, press Print / save as PDF and choose “Save as PDF” as the destination in the print dialog. That gives you a two-page PDF — puzzle, then key — ready to email home, drop into Google Classroom, or file for next year. One sizing note: grids 18 and 20 letters wide automatically print with slightly smaller cells so the whole puzzle stays on a single sheet; grids up to 15 wide print at the full cell size.

A word search is quiet, focused vocabulary reinforcement: to find a word, a student checks its exact spelling against the grid dozens of times, letter by letter, and the word bank keeps the correct form in front of them the whole while. Paste in this week’s spelling list and print an Easy version for Monday and a Hard one for Friday — same words, very different hunt. And because Shuffle rearranges the same words into a brand-new grid, you can print a different-looking sheet for each table group in seconds — identical word list, no copying from a neighbour.

It also earns its keep as an early-finisher activity: keep a folder of themed sheets by the door, and fast finishers have something genuinely on-topic rather than busywork. The ready-made printable word searches fill that folder without any typing.

A note on readability: letter cells print at a fixed size — just under a centimetre square — on every grid up to 15 wide, while the 18- and 20-wide grids shrink their cells to keep the puzzle on one page. So picking a bigger grid does not print bigger letters; it prints more (and on the biggest grids, slightly smaller) ones. For younger students, or anyone who needs the clearest possible type, the accessible move is the opposite: keep the grid at 15 or below, use fewer and shorter words, and stick to Easy so every word reads in the direction English is read.
