Spring Word Search

Everything in this grid is either growing or just arriving: BLOSSOM, SPROUT and BLOOM for the garden, a ROBIN back on its NEST, a CATERPILLAR that is eleven letters long and headed for BUTTERFLY, and the APRIL weather to go with it all — PUDDLE, RAINBOW, UMBRELLA. Twenty words in total.

Spring is the theme we point primary teachers to in life-cycle season. The list quietly covers seed-to-flower (SEEDS, SPROUT, BLOOM, BLOSSOM) and egg-to-butterfly (NEST, HATCH, CATERPILLAR, BUTTERFLY), so a finished sheet can be sorted into sequences as a follow-up activity instead of going straight into the recycling. It reads comfortably from second grade, and DAFFODIL will teach at least one child per class how that word is actually spelled — two F’s, with a second D hiding past the middle.

The tip: go long first. CATERPILLAR at eleven letters and BUTTERFLY at nine are the easiest finds on the sheet precisely because they are enormous, and each carries a doubled letter — LL and TT — to anchor on. Circle those two early and the space left over for the five-letter words shrinks wonderfully fast.

The answer key always prints as page two, whether or not it is showing on screen — keep it stapled behind or recycle it.

Paper & ink

Press Print / save as PDF above (or use your browser’s own print command) and only the sheet goes to the printer — no site header, no buttons. The puzzle prints on page one and the answer key on page two, whether or not the key is showing on screen. Letter and A4 paper both fit without changing any settings, and the sheet is designed for black-and-white printing, so a plain laser printer produces exactly what you see here. To keep a digital copy instead, choose “Save as PDF” as the destination in the print dialog.

This puzzle is free to print and share for personal and classroom use — run off thirty copies for the class without asking. It is not for resale, and a credit to duplixo.com is appreciated when you pass it along. No sign-up required.
