To solve Queens faster, start with the smallest colour region, place any crown that is forced, then immediately cross out its whole row, its whole column, the rest of its region and all eight neighbouring cells. Every board is uniquely solvable by pure deduction — so the skill is spotting the next forced crown, never guessing.

First Principles

Attack the most constrained square first

Queens is a puzzle of constraints, and constraints are not spread evenly across the board. Some regions are big and roomy; others are cramped into two or three cells. The single most useful habit is to read the board in order of how tight it is — smallest region first, then the corners and edges, then the crowded middle — because a crown is forced exactly where the options run out.

The smallest colour region is almost always the best opening. A one-cell region hands you a crown for free: it has nowhere else to put one. A two- or three-cell region is nearly as good, because a single elimination often collapses it to one legal square. Big regions, by contrast, tell you very little early on, so scanning them first is wasted effort.

Region shape matters as much as size. A thin region that stretches along a single row or a single column is a gift: wherever its crown lands, it must lie on that line, which means no other region may claim that row or column. You have learned something about the whole board before placing a single crown. Corners and edges help for a related reason — a cell on the rim has fewer neighbours, so the no-touch rule bites less there and forced placements are easier to see.

The Follow-Through

Work the eliminations before the next crown

The commonest way to slow yourself down is to place a crown and move straight on to hunting the next one. Do not. Every crown is worth a burst of bookkeeping first — and that bookkeeping is usually what reveals the next forced move. When you place a crown, mark the whole of its row, the whole of its column, every other cell in its region, and all eight surrounding cells with a no-mark.

That last part — the diagonal neighbours — is where the leverage hides. A crown does not just claim its row and column; it throws a one-cell moat around itself. That moat is what makes the only-square-left deduction fire so often: a region that looked like it had three options frequently has just one once the neighbouring crowns have moated out the rest.

Row and column exclusion is the same idea from the other direction. Instead of asking “where can this crown go?”, ask “what is left in this row?” If a row has been crossed out everywhere except a single region’s cell, that cell is the row’s crown. Late in a solve, when the grid is dense with no-marks, these line-based deductions come thick and fast — which is why the marks are worth keeping tidy.

Scan versus commit. Hold a firm line between the two. Scan freely — test ideas in your head, follow a chain of “if this, then that” — but only commit a crown to the board when it is genuinely forced. If your reasoning ever bottoms out in “it is probably here”, stop and re-scan the smallest regions and the rims; a real deduction is waiting. Committing on a hunch is how an otherwise clean board collapses four moves later, with no obvious sign of where it went wrong.

A Worked Sequence

Watch four tactics chain together

Here is a short chain around the bottom-left of a board, showing how one deduction feeds the next. Rows are numbered top to bottom, columns left to right.

1. Region on a line. Suppose the Rose region is just two cells, both in the bottom row: row 8, column 1 and row 8, column 2. Rose’s crown must be one of them, so it lands in row 8 no matter which. That reserves row 8 for Rose — every other region is now barred from the bottom row.

2. Row and column exclusion. Now suppose an earlier crown already sits at row 3, column 1, so column 1 is taken. That knocks out Rose’s row 8, column 1 option, because a column may hold only one crown.

3. Only-square-left. Rose now has a single legal cell remaining — row 8, column 2 — so its crown is forced there. A two-cell region has resolved itself with one outside fact.

4. No-touch moat. Sweep the consequences. Cross out the rest of row 8 and the rest of column 2, then the eight neighbours of the new crown: row 7, columns 1, 2 and 3, and row 8, columns 1 and 3. If a neighbouring region — say one occupying row 7, columns 1 and 2 — had exactly those cells, it has just been moated down to nothing there and must take its crown further along row 7 instead. And so the chain rolls on into the next region.

Notice the pattern: a shape fact (Rose on a line) plus an outside fact (column 1 used) produced a forced crown, whose moat then set up the next deduction. That interlocking is the whole game. Nothing here was a guess.

Common mistakes to avoid

The fastest way to wreck a solve is to forget that the no-touch rule includes diagonals. Solvers instinctively guard rows and columns, then leave two crowns sitting kitty-corner — which is illegal, and often only shows up as an unsolvable knot several moves later. Treat every crown as having a full one-cell moat, corners included.

Committing on a hunch. Placing a crown because it “feels right” rather than because it is forced is the single biggest source of ruined boards. Since every Queens grid is uniquely solvable, a guess that happens to be wrong will quietly poison the rest of the puzzle. If you cannot name the deduction, do not place the crown.

Skipping the bookkeeping. Placing a crown without marking its row, column, region and neighbours means you re-solve the same eliminations in your head every time you look at that area. Cross the cells out once and let the no-marks do the remembering.

Scanning big regions first. Large regions carry little early information, so starting there feels busy but rarely forces anything. Always drop back to the smallest region and the rims when a board feels stuck.

Ignoring a region trapped on a line. A thin region confined to one row or column reserves that whole line. Solvers who only think in terms of single cells miss this, and with it the fastest exclusions on the board.
