Foam Density (ILD/IFD) — Verified Audits
Low-density foam (under 1.5 lb/ft³ / 24 kg/m³) breaks down within 2–3 years under regular use. Quality sofa alternatives specify foam density in their product documentation. If a brand cannot provide these specs, it is a red flag.
Audits using Foam Density (ILD/IFD)
Ligne Roset Togo Sofa Alternatives: 3-Layer Polyether Foam Density Audit (2026)
The Togo's 'sink-in' feel comes from 3 layers of polyether foam (28 + 34 + 40 kg/m³), not fabric. 92% of copies use single-density 18 kg/m³ sponge that bottoms out in 6 months. The Foam Compression Test identifies which alternatives pass at under $2,000.
B&B Italia Camaleonda Alternatives: Biomorphic HR Foam & Modular Construction Audit (2026)
The Camaleonda ($25,000) uses 55 kg/m³ HR foam in a kidney geometry + T-bar modular system. Eternity Modern ($5,000) replicates both at 9.1/10. The Foam Density Test and Modular Stress Test explained.
What is Foam Density (ILD/IFD)?
Foam density is measured in pounds per cubic foot (lb/ft³) or kg/m³; higher density (1.8 lb/ft³ / 28 kg/m³+) indicates more durable, supportive foam. ILD (Indentation Load Deflection) measures firmness — the force required to indent the foam 25% of its height.
