Fragrance

Musk Accord

Definition

A base note family in perfumery. Natural musk (from the musk deer gland) is now illegal — all commercial musks are synthetic. The main synthetic musks used: Galaxolide (powdery-clean), Habanolide (sheer-floral), White Musk (clean-laundry), Iso E Super (skin-close woody musk), Ambroxan (warm, marine musk). Each has a distinct character.

Why it matters for dupe shopping

The musk layer determines a fragrance's skin-feel — how close or projecting it sits on your skin in the final dry-down. Many budget dupes use cheap Galaxolide-heavy musks that smell 'clean' but generic. Higher-quality dupes match the original's specific musk profile, which is identifiable via GC/MS reports.
