Bakuchiol

Definition

A meroterpene derived from the Psoralea corylifolia plant. Clinically shown to stimulate collagen synthesis and reduce fine lines via a retinol-like mechanism, without the photosensitivity or irritation of actual retinoids. Safe during pregnancy (unlike retinol). Studied at concentrations of 0.5–1%.

Why it matters for dupe shopping

Bakuchiol is the legitimate retinol alternative for sensitive skin or pregnancy-safe routines. However, many products market 'bakuchiol' at concentrations below 0.5% — too low for clinical effect. Check the INCI position and look for 'bakuchiol' (not 'bakuchiol oil' or 'bakuchiol extract') in the top half of the ingredients list.
